Consumer Reports Discusses Hearing Aids

It has been more than 17 years since Consumer Reports examined hearing aids.  The technology and industry has changed significantly in that time, so this report is long overdue.  Interestingly, while Consumer Reports typically rates products and manufactuers with regard to the consumer items available, when they looked at hearing aids they chose to emphasize the importance of getting the right audiologist who can make the right recommendation for a product, and who can also make the right adjustment to these sophisticated devices.

Consumer Advice Booklet Available at JC Audiology

Dr. Judith Reese, Audiologist and owner of JC Audiology & Hearing Aids in Lutz, has just published a booklet filled with consumer advice and guidance on the purchase of hearing aids.  As part of May’s “Better Hearing Month,” she is making this guide available for free to anyone requesting one.  Call (813) 949-1331 for your free copy.

This guide has a checklist of points that consumers should be aware of regarding hearing aids and dispensers.  Additionally, the guide contains information on the different features of hearing aids as well as some cautionary advice pertaining to misleading advertising about hearing devices.

Dr. Reese has worked with hearing-impaired people since 1990 and has fit thousands of patients with hearing aids in the Tampa Bay area.  Before opening her clinic, JC Audiology, she was an audiologist with the Veterans Administration, where she received the Department of Veterans Affairs Performance Award at the James A. Haley Veterans Administration Hospital in Tampa in 2004. She is also currently the contract audiologist with Florida Hospital in Zephyrhills.

In 2005, her research was praised by The Hearing Journal as being of primary importance to hearing clinicians throughout the country.

Just in time for the Rays’ Post-Season Cheering . . .

. . . It's "National Protect Your Hearing" Month!

100_0494 Dr. Judith Reese (shown with Rays mascot during the game in which the Rays clinched their first ever playoff berth), Audiologist with JC Audiology Clinic in Lutz, is offering complimentary hearing screenings during October in conjunction with “National Protect Your Hearing Month.” This is especially important to Tampa Bay area fans, who endure loud cheering from the Rays victories, as well as Bulls and Bucs cheering.  Exposure to noise is linked to permanent hearing loss.

The American Academy of Audiology, of which Dr. Reese is a member, has launched the month-long awareness initiative to heighten attention to the more than 36 million Americans today who have hearing loss. One in three developed their hearing loss as a result of exposure to noise.  Dr. Reese urges her patients to protect their hearing by:

  • Wearing hearing protection when around sounds louder than 85dB for a long period of time;
  • Turning down the volume when listening to the radio, the TV, MP3 player, or anything through ear buds and headphones; and
  • Walking away from loud noise.

Dr. Reese says that noise-induced hearing loss is caused by damage to the hair cells that are found in our inner ear. Hair cells are small sensory cells that convert the sounds we hear (sound energy) into electrical signals that travel to the brain. Once damaged our hair cells cannot grow back, causing permanent hearing loss. “That’s why I wore my earplugs when I watched our long-beloved Rays clinch the playoffs against the Twins,” she explains. “So, come by JC Audiology for your free earplugs before the 2008 World Series games.”

In addition to October being “National Protect Your Hearing Month,” the American Academy of Audiology also designated the month as “National Audiology Awareness Month.”

The American Academy of Audiology states that an audiologist is a highly educated and clinically experienced health-care professional who specializes in evaluating, diagnosing, and treating people with hearing loss and balance disorders. Audiologists treat patients of all ages, from newborns to centenarians. The first step in treatment of a hearing problem is a hearing evaluation by an audiologist.

Although hearing problems are commonly associated with the normal aging process, more than half of all hearing-impaired persons are younger than 65. With the increased use of personal music players (MP3s) and earbuds, the number of Americans experiencing hearing loss at a younger age is growing.

JC Audiology is a locally-owned clinic founded by Dr. Judith Reese, a nationally-known audiologist who was cited as among the best in the nation by the Hearing Journal for her research.  The clinic is in the North Fork Professional Center, 1541 Dale Mabry Highway, Suite 201, Lutz.

How Sweet it is!

100_0354 This cake of Reese candies was created by Dr. Judith Reese and Charlie Reese to serve as a centerpiece for their table at the Central Pasco Chamber of Commerce Annual Banquet.  The Reeses donated it to Heritage Bank, where it went on display for donations for those who wanted a chance to win the delicious tower of Reese candies.  All donations went to Christian Social Services in Land O'Lakes.

JC Audiology was one of the Business of the Year nominees with the Central Pasco Chamber of Commerce--one of four nominees out of more than 525 members.

Speaking of 525--that's how many patients JC Audiology has served from August 2005 to July 2008.
